UPGRADE TO WINDOWS VISTA - MARCH 2007 ARTICLE

Wondering about windows?

Bottom Line:  If you want Vista, buy a new PC.  Don’t upgrade.

We recommend waiting, however, if you are ready to jump in and try it, read on.

Upgrading your current computer to Windows Vista is a bad idea.  At least for most computers, it will be a big project.

If you want Windows Vista, buy a new computer.

You may wonder why.  The fact is that your current computer has components that may not work with Vista.  If that is the case, you either replace parts, or just stop and do not install the upgrade. In case you did not know, each component in your computer has to have a driver program that tells it how to work with everything else in the computer.  You have a printer, video card, sound card, etc. and each of these has a driver for your version of Windows.  Upgrade and you need an upgraded version of the driver.

We helped a customer upgrade his computer to Windows Vista.  He bought a new video card and a new sound card. That process took a lot of research, as the cards had to be compatible with his current motherboard, and have Vista drivers.  Even then, until it was all installed and the software installed, there was some risk that things would not “play well together.”

A new computer assembled for use with Windows Vista comes with everything designed to play well together.  Your current computer, running and older version of Windows has some value as a trade in with everything working together, especially if you have kept all the CD’s together that came with the computer.
